When it was announced that Megan Fox wouldn't be returning for the third installment of the "Transformers" franchise, many wondered who would be appealing enough to keep the predominantly young male fan base drooling.
Enter Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the knockout Victoria's Secret model, who is not only stepping off the runway and onto the big screen for her acting debut, but is taking over as the female lead in the billion-dollar franchise, for "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." While we still don't know how her character Carly will stack up against Fox's Mikaela, Rosie has already joined the ranks of models who have made the transition to film.
As we anticipate the 24-year-old beauty's breakout role, we look back at five memorable model's performances on celluloid (hey, it's one of the few times we can actually use "model" and "celluloid" in the same sentence), the good, the bad, and the (coyote) ugly.
Tyra Banks in "Coyote Ugly"
While this wasn't Tyra Banks' first go on the big screen (she was previously seen in "Higher Learning" and "Love & Basketball") seeing as it's the one in which she plays a sexy bartender-turned-law-student, her small role as Zoe in "Coyote Ugly" certainly garnered the most attention. Be it the skimpy outfits she and her co-stars wore or her impromptu performance of Snap!'s "The Power" in a grimy diner, Tyra certainly made us believe she was a Coyote Ugly employee who really liked ketchup. As far as her saving dough for law school, well, that was about as believable as the entirety of the embarrassingly re-watchable 2000 comedy-musical.
Rebecca Romijn in "X-Men"
It's almost too fitting that Rebecca Romijn's superhero
character's name in 2000's "X-Men" was Mystique, as for years, she was known for just that for her work on the runway and in fashion magazines. Romijn hardly got lost in the shuffle among Hollywood heavy-hitters like Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and fellow models-turned-actress Halle Berry, but that would have been nearly impossible considering the striking blonde is entirely nude, except for full-body blue paint, in some eye-popping scenes.Elizabeth Hurley "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery"
There's long been a ridiculous notion that you can't be funny and hot. Brit beauty and Estee Lauder spokes woman Elizabeth Hurley proved that flawed logic very much wrong when she appeared in Mike Myers' classic 1997 comedy spoof "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery." While Hurley played second banana to Myers' over-the-top spy as Vanessa Kensington, she certainly earned her keep as more than just eye candy when she was game for silly sequences, including, memorably, a bit with some very strategically placed fruits.
Cindy Crawford in "Fair Game"
As far as we're concerned Cindy Crawford was the '90s, so it pains us that the woman who put beauty marks on the map also turned out one of the worst movies of that decade. Crawford made her film debut in the 1995 crime drama as a a civil law attorney named Kate (maybe she went to the same school as Tyra) being protected from the KBG by a cop (Billy Baldwin). Crawford was panned and never had a starring role in a movie again (she probably should have just stuck with those Pepsi commercials), but hey, at least it wasn't as bad as Pamela Anderson's epic flop "Barb Wire"!
Milla Jovovich in "The Fifth Element"
It's sometimes easy to forget that Milla Jovovich was a supermodel long before she was a butt-kicking Hollywood action heroine. Not because she's not a total knockout (which, c'mon, she is), but because her breakout performance in 1997's trippy sci-fi cult favorite "The Fifth Element" turned her into a full-fledged movie star. Her Leeloo was as hot as her fiery orange hair (Jovovich even earned an MTV Movie Award nod for her battle against the aliens in the Best Fight category) and her barely-there white tape outfit has become a Halloween costume staple for the especially daring.
